Northern California newspapers reported that several hospitals in Santa Clara County had illegally disposed of used bags of blood, bloody sheets, clothing, and medical instruments resulting in an overflow of county medical waste. The hazardous hospital waste generated was usually sent to the Guadalupe landfill, but the landfill subsequently stopped accepting all waste except for clerical trash.

American Technologies, Inc. was hired by another hospital in the area, which had not been charged with any violations, to empty a 20-ton container of trash that had accrued for several weeks in a compactor bin.

The waste was removed from the bin by trained bio-recovery technicians and transferred to individual biohazard waste containers over the course of three days. Extra precautions were taken by American Technologies, Inc. technicians to prevent exposure to biohazards. Personal protective equipment and hand tools were utilized to move the trash to the waste containers.

The project was completed on time with no complications and the hospital staff happily bid adieu to the odorous, dangerous and repugnant hazardous waste.
